During Racial Harmony Day...

WHY WE CELEBRATE RACIAL HARMONY DAY?

Racial Harmony Day is celebrated annually on 21 July. The event is to commemorate the 1964 Racial Riots, which took place on 21 July 1964. Because of this 4 people were killed and 178 injured only on the first day of the riot.
Another example is on May 5, 1854,riots between the Hokkien-Teochew began. This lasted for 10-12 days, leaving 400 dead and 300 home destroyed.

These riots reminds Singaporeans to be united and we have to pledge in the coming years to keep our nation safe and sound.

Racial Harmony Day is commemorated to mark the race riots, and also to serve as a day for reflection and a reminder of the need for racial harmony in multi-racial Singapore, and how the exploitation of communal feelings can threaten the political stability of Singapore.

In Other Countries...

Even other countries see the the importance of racial harmony, for example Malaysia.

The Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry released a schedule of concerts, film festivals, publication launches, ceremonies and exhibits ahead of National Day on August 31 to show the country's success in cultivating racial harmony. Also, celebrations will show how far society has evolved, with musicians and dancers from different ethnic groups performing to "reflect the lives of the various races in Malaysia that are always united.''

Also, on 20 Feb 2002, the first World Harmony Day was held at the Suntec City's fountain.

This shows that Racial Harmony Day is a major event that should be taken seriously. Not only is racial harmony important within Singapore but also with other countries. Peace and bonding between the different ethnic groups has brought Singapore to where it is today - a peaceful, stable and a successful nation.
